La Codorniz of Enrique Herreros

The aim of the exhibition La Codorniz de Enrique Herreros to offer the public the particular and representative work of this artist, created in an age marked by the disillusion and the scepticism of a society endeavouring to recover from the civil war consequences. During this period Enrique Herreros, primarily using a collage technique, produces a series of exceptional artistic covers for the weekly magazine “La Codorniz”, a legendary publication in the Spanish graphic humour history.

In these covers, Herreros spills out all his artistic sensitivity, all his wisdom as an arts man, a fine humorist and social critic, which, after a series or covers, gets him in the avant-garde of Spanish graphic design of this period.

The value of our exhibition is displaying, for the first time and in a homogeneous way, a rigorous selection of the best cover works made by Herreros for “La Codorniz”, to which this artist dedicated his whole life and where he enjoyed a certain amount of freedom, something which was inconceivable in the majority of publications of that time. At the same time, we believe this exhibition is also useful to understand the ups and downs and the meaning of “La Codorniz” in that post war period, as well as its importance in the development of the Spanish society to this day.
